Portable Water Softener
The Fort Defiance Industries Portable Water Softener (PWS) is a lightweight, mobile unit designed to remove minerals from hard water. Inside the PWS are thousands of resin beads which remove calcium and magnesium ions. The PWS can be used over and over by simply regenerating the resin using standard table salt (sodium chloride). Connecting the PWS is fast and easy – just connect two hoses with garden hose fittings – no tools needed.

The PWS was designed for use in military Combat Support Hospitals to prevent scale build-up (calcification) on the heater elements within steam sterilizers.
3 Key Benefits of using the PWS with steam sterilizers:
- Eliminates sterilizer downtime and maintenance labor to replace heating elements and scrape clean the boiler surfaces.
- Improves sterilizer batch cycle times by keeping heat-up times short (just 1.6 mm of scale build-up on the heating elements causes a 12% loss in heating efficiency).
- Improves soldier safety by eliminating the potential for sterilizer rupture due to localized hot spots and vessel failure.
What is the capacity of the PWS?
The amount of soft water that the PWS can produce depends on the hardness of the supply water. The PWS can remove 16,000 grains of calcium and magnesium before it needs to be regenerated. For example, very hard water might have 16 grains/gallon (GPG). Therefore, the PWS could soften approximately 1,000 gallons before it would need to be regenerated (e.g., 16,000 ÷ 16 GPG = 1,000 gallons). The table below shows the approximate capacity in softened water that the PWS can produce for varying supply water hardness levels.

Regenerating the PWS
A durable, waterproof instruction card comes attached to the PWS with complete step-by-step instructions for regenerating the resin. The PWS comes with two Regen Packs and a dozen water hardness Test Strips. Fort Defiance Regen Packs are uniquely packaged for use with the PWS. Heat-sealed within heavy-duty plastic, each pack is measured and formulated with Super Iron Out® to improve performance. As a substitute, use 5 lbs (~ 4 cups) of standard table salt.
